Architecture

No CMS. No plugins. Nothing to break.

A hand-coded site ships only the code it actually needs. There is no theme engine to boot, no plugin stack to keep patched, and no database sitting between a visitor and your content — the browser is handed HTML, CSS and a few kilobytes of JavaScript, and paints it.

That is the whole reason this site moves the way it does. Every section was written on purpose rather than assembled from parts, which is also why there is nothing in it that quietly breaks the next time something auto-updates.

Why hand-coded
Illustration on a blue-to-tan gradient: a white code editor window labeled index.html showing a few lines of hand-written HTML, next to a smaller white card listing a crossed-out CMS stack — CMS core, page builder, 23 plugins, database — captioned "One file. Written on purpose."

Visibility

Written for people and for answer engines.

Every screen on this site is a real URL with real HTML behind it. Answer engines — Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity — can only quote what they can parse, and a page that assembles itself in JavaScript after load often isn't there when they look.

So the motion is CSS and the content is markup. Headings stay in outline order, structured data describes what each page is, and the scrolljacking never costs a single indexable word — the deck you're scrolling is seven separate, crawlable pages.

Scrolljacking and SEO
Illustration of a search results page on a blue-to-tan gradient: a white search bar reading "scroll-driven website design" above three white result cards for thebetterwebsite.com's home, web development, and portfolio pages, each marked with a green "Indexed" badge, captioned "One experience. Real pages. All indexed."
